17 4.2| Community Etiquette

It is important that the HANDS in Autism® Center be represented consistently and appropriately across all settings and among professionals. Thus, we strive to communicate as clearly and consistently as possible with clients, collaborators, fellow staff at IU and Riley, and those in the community. Dr. Swiezy and Dr. Neal serve as the primary voice for the HANDS in Autism® Center while other HANDS staff members communicate messages on topics within their individual areas of expertise. More specific guidelines are as follows:

  • When asked questions about the HANDS in Autism® Center, demonstration classrooms, or HANDS in Autism® events (e.g. purpose, audience, or event details), you may answer those questions for which you have the requisite knowledge. Otherwise, please refer questions to the appropriate HANDS in Autism® staff member.
  • When speaking with clinic patients or their families, trainees, or community professionals, please use a professional salutation for Dr. Swiezy and Dr. Neal (e.g., “Hello, Dr. Swiezy/Neal”) instead of referring to Dr. Swiezy or Dr. Neal by their first names.
