4 The 964 : 1988-1992

In 1988, the 964 generation was introduced with 85% new components, giving Porsche a modern and sustainable platform. The 964 generation also gave the world the 911 Carrera 4, an all-wheel drive version of the already beloved 911. The standard 964 911 Carrera, in both rear-wheel (Carrera 2) and all-wheel drive, was equipped with an air-cooled 3.6l flat six that delivered 250hp. The bumpers were revised to a more aerodynamic design and an automatically extending rear spoiler, that deployed at 50 mph, were added.  Comfort, performance, and safety were also enhanced with the addition of anti-lock brakes (ABS), power steering, airbags, and a new chassis that used coil springs rather than the outdated torsion-bar suspension of the previous generations. The 964 911 Turbo S was also unveiled, boasting a 3.6l turbocharged engine with 360hp, a full 60hp gain over the standard 911 Turbo. [1]
