3 The G Series : 1973-1987

The G series is the first thorough makeover for the 911, produced from 1973 to 1987. The visual changes to the body were not only cosmetic, but designed to meet crash standards in the US. Safety was also improved by the introduction of integrated headrests in the seats and 3-point safety belts. Perhaps the most significant change, one that would affect the performance future of the 911, was the introduction of a 3.0l turbocharged flat six that produced 260hp in 1974. This also heralded the birth of the 911 Turbo trim. The Turbo’s blend of luxury and performance became the epitome of the 911’s spirit. In ’77, the Turbo reached a new level with its new 3.3l turbocharged flat six that pumped out 300hp, making it the best in it’s class. In 1983, the Carrera moniker made its debut, along with a naturally aspirated (non-turbo) 3.2l engine that made 231hp. The G series also gave us the option of the Cabriolet, or convertible in 1982.[1]
