e-Learning Design & Services (eDS)

Instructional design support for online courses at Indiana University is provided by the eLearning Design & Services (eDS) team from UITS Learning Technologies. Since 2013, the experienced instructional designers and technologists at eDS have helped hundreds of faculty and staff develop online, hybrid, and in-person courses that meet state and federal quality guidelines and set new standards for student engagement and accessibility.

Individual Course Development

The instructional design team is well-versed in pedagogy, best practices and IU-supported technologies. Your instructional designer is your point of contact for all project needs, connecting you with accessibility expertise, graphic designers, video support, and hands-on help building your course in Canvas. They will collaborate with you to develop your course from start to finish or help enhance your existing online class. You’ll have expert guidance as you create measurable learning outcomes, dynamic lecture content, engaging activities, and relevant assessments. As you share your goals and expertise, the ID will recommend pedagogical approaches and Canvas structures to match your course’s specific needs.

Academic Program Development

In addition to developing individual courses with faculty, eDS also works with departments to re-design all the courses in a specific degree program. Taking this approach allows your department to create a suite of courses with a branded visual design, custom course navigation, and standardized set of tools across a degree program. The instructional design team works with academic leadership to create a unified look and feel that is consistent throughout the program to create an intuitive learning experience for the student. At the assessment level, eDS coordinates with stakeholders to align class assessments to program competencies in Canvas, allowing for a detailed view of student success analytics across the program. Additionally, the team works with individual instructors within the program to identify opportunities for cross-collaboration with faculty and outside experts in the field. They will help you leverage tools like PlayPosit and Gradescope to design assessments and activities that maximize student engagement while minimizing the time required for faculty to deliver meaningful feedback to students.

Onboardings/Orientations

eDS has designed multiple student orientation and employee onboarding courses in Canvas. These onboarding cohorts are an effective way to distribute important information and resources to new members, and they help learners to feel connected to the institution and confident in their ability to succeed. Using Canvas also allows you to track student progress, celebrate milestones through badging or digital credentials, and deliver just-in-time resources as learners progress through the course.

“I have always felt that eDS does an amazing job supporting faculty and have been an excellent resource in keeping our courses cutting edge.” Melinda Stanley, Faculty Director, Applied Science, IUK

“The results of our collaborations have uniformly met with substantial success, improving experiences and outcomes for literally thousands of students in the McKinney School of Law alone.” Max Huffman, Vice Dean and Professor of Law, McKinney School of Law
