  • Under the baton of director J. Jerome Amend, and associate director Anita Cocker-Hunt, the Commonwealth Brass Band performed a concert on March 30, 2022.  The Commonwealth Brass Band — an ensemble-in-residence at IU Southeast — is an English-style brass band, and repertoire is selected to highlight that tradition.
  • Under the direction of Dr. Brittny Kempfer, the IU Southeast Concert Choir and Community Chorus performed on April 3, 2022. Well…the ‘self-directed’ performance had a new twist. The IU Southeast concert choir, made up entirely of students, created the entire event from scratch. A new ensemble will start next year. Anyone who wants to join can choose the direction they want to go for each semester, whether it’s a cappella, rock and rolls, or another genre of music. Read more ⬈
  • The IU Southeast Concert Band, under the direction of Philip A Thomas performed a concert on April 10, 2022.
  • The IU Southeast Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Joanna Goldstein and Dr. Molly Baugh, presented a very special spring concert on April 24, 2022. After serving 40 years at Indiana University Southeast, Professor of Music, Dr. Goldstein, will retire at the end of this academic year. Dr. Goldstein has led the Music Department through many changes, from the building of the Ogle Center to initiating new degree programs. Her tireless work as a professor, musician, conductor, soloist, and former Dean of the School of Arts and Letters has helped inspire the lives of her students, friends, community members, and colleagues. At the performance, Dr. Baugh conducted Rossini’s “Overture to La gazza ladra” and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op.30 which featured Dr. Joanna Goldstein on piano. The performance of the concerto ended with a standing ovation and three curtain calls. Dr. Goldstein was presented with flowers after her performance.Following a brief intermission, she then conducted the IU Southeast Orchestra in a substantial piece of the classical repertoire, Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 90. We will greatly miss Dr. Goldstein and wish her nothing but the best in the next chapter of her life.
  • Congratulations to Nicole Turner, IU Southeast’s first Music Ed grad student. Her paper “Color Coding Music to Help Students with Special Needs” has been accepted by the IU Southeast Graduate Student Research Journal. Congrats also to Dr. Molly Baugh for assisting via discussions about ideas and literature sources for Nicole’s paper.
  • The Music Department is thrilled to announce that the winner of the Music History Research Award is Patrick Regan, majoring in music education. Patrick’s paper, entitled “Ballet by Aaron”, examines Aaron Copland’s ballets and his collaborations with choreographers such as Agnes de Miller and Martha Graham. Congratulations Patrick! Some years ago, Dr. Ann Glazer Niren established the Music History Research Award to promote excellence in research and writing. Students who win this award are expected to go “above and beyond”, by using foreign language sources, choosing a unique topic, or developing original research. Any student enrolled in a music literature or history course is eligible for this award.
