Arts & Letters Highlights

  • Congratulations to Professor Diane Reid, who retired in June after forty years in the IU Southeast Communication program. She will be greatly missed and we thank her for all of her years of service to this school and to our campus.
  • Dr. Brittny Kempfer has been named Assistant Professor of Music Education and Choral Music. She fills the position vacated by Jeramy Nichols’ resignation. Dr. Kempfer is an active researcher and presenter for the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and the Modern Band Summit. She recently founded the HearMe (Holistic, Engaging, and Relevant Music Education) initiative and has been presenting/facilitating webinars to assist music educators to create music curriculum and classrooms that are holistic, engaging, and relevant to students and their varied cultures. She is also a member of the American Choral Directors Association, the College Music Society, and the Association for Popular Music Education. Dr. Kempfer currently serves as a Sergeant with the 202nd Army National Guard Band out of Frankfort, Kentucky. She holds degrees in music education from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a Ph.D. from Auburn University.
  • David Nelson has been hired as the new Assistant Technical Director for the Ogle Center. David isn’t new to IU Southeast or the Ogle Center. He was a Theatre Department adjunct for several semesters and has done some consulting work for the Ogle Center over the years. We are thrilled to have him on our team!
  • If you need writing help, the IU Southeast Writing Center is the place to be. The Writing Center is now located at the campus library. Read more about how to use the Writing Center’s resources.
  • International Educational Week was held during the third week in November. It will take place in the Hoosier Room. Read more about it.
  • Kathryn Girten has been appointed acting chancellor at IU Southeast. She was named acting chancellor to fill the position former Chancellor Ray Wallace held. Dr. Wallace stepped down as chancellor after seven years in the role due to a worsening health condition. Read more about Dr. Girten.
  • The 2021 Distinguished Teaching and Service Awards were presented as part of the 2021 State of the Campus ceremony held on October 1. Congratulations to Dr. Ann Niren, Adjunct Music faculty, awarded the much-deserved Distinguished Teaching Award (Part-Time Faculty).
  • In an unprecedented move, the award for Distinguished Service/Maintenance Award honored the entire staff of the Office of Facility Operations, in recognition of their tireless efforts to keep the campus clean, safe and operational during the pandemic. Special thanks to the Arts and Letters custodial staff!! Read more about it.
  • ‘A Christmas Story: The Musical’ performances at Derby Dinner Playhouse starred Dean Jim Hesselman as the father, Lincoln Fogarty as Ralphie, and Alton Niemeier as Randy, his two sons in the play. Christy Paris, Dean Hesselman’s record specialist is Lincoln’s aunt and Cheryl Young, Dean Hesselman’s administrative assistant is Alton’s great nephew.
