Under the direction of Ashley Wallace, the Theatre Department presented Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. The story revolves around the relationship of three middle-aged single siblings, two of whom live together, and takes place during a visit by the third, Masha, who supports them. The performance brought comedy, Chekhov references, and great characterization to the stage.

  • Natalie Bowman, Costume Shop Manager and Designer for the Music and Theatre Department shared the Monster Sampler and Earbud projects students in her Costume Technology class worked on during the spring semester.

    THE EARBUD POUCH
image of earbud pouchThis project taught the students how to complete a variety of machine-sewing techniques used in theatrical costuming. Ms. Bowman guided this project during in-class instruction and usually takes about four class periods to complete. The object of this project was to introduce the students to creating a useful product with machine-sewing techniques used in theatrical costuming. As a finished product, the pouches are not only useful, but also a visual reminder of techniques they will use in their final project. The techniques covered in this project also served other purposes. For example: the sewing area is small and curved, this requires the students to learn to control the speed of the machine with hand/eye coordination. The zipper is technique that offers the students a sense of achievement. Zippers can be daunting even to the seasoned costume technologist.

    THE MONSTER SAMPLER
Image of several finished monster pin cushionsThis project taught the students how to complete a variety of hand-sewing techniques used in theatrical costuming. The project was a low-stakes learning/practicing tool that allowed for mistakes and creativity (monsters aren’t meant to be pretty or perfect).

As a finished product, the monsters are not only a pin-cushion, but also a visual reminder of the stitches as the students worked towards precise and consistent stitches that they submitted in their Sampler Assignment that is compiled throughout the semester. Some of the techniques they worked on for this assignment are: the cross stitch, the blanket stitch, the whip stitch, the running stitch, the vertical hem stitch, the slip stitch, as well as sewing on snaps, buttons, and suspender buttons.
