  • Adjunct Professor, Jon Silpayamanant hosted a BBC Radio 3 show called “World of Classical”. He is a New Albany cellist, composer. Jon was featured in the News and Tribune announcing the hosting of the program. Watch the archived episodes ⬈

  • IU Southeast hosted panel presentations for faculty members who received summer funding from the Research and Grants Committee for research and creative work. Each panel included 8-10 minute presentations followed by a brief time for questions from the audience. Professor Molly Baugh received $4,000 in funding for a Summer Faculty Research Fellowship.
  • On Saturday, October 29, the IU Southeast Music Department hosted the first annual IU Southeast Middle School Honor Orchestra. Students from Hazelwood, Highland Hills, and Scribner Middle Schools participated in a full day of exciting rehearsals led by Dr. Molly Baugh and IU Southeast music education students. The festival concluded with a fantastic concert for the students’ families and friends.

  • The IU Southeast Holiday Pops concert was held on December 3. The concerts have become an annual tradition for many area concertgoers. Traditional holiday favorites were performed by the IU Southeast Orchestra, Concert Choir & Community Chorus, and Concert Band.
  • Dr. Erich Stem’s “Shenandoah,” for orchestra, was recently recorded by the James Madison University Symphony Orchestra and is set for a future album release. The work included a video montage of the Shenandoah region (Virginia) and dance elements with Louisville Ballet’s choreographer and dancer, Ashley Thursby.
  • Adjunct Professor Jeff Jamner (piano) presented Juliek’s Violin as part of the Violins of Hope Indianapolis and the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. Juliek’s Violin is a program presented on PBS Learning Media about Music and the Holocaust.
  • Carrie RavenStem (clarinet) recently performed as a guest artist and speaker at the University of Tennessee (Martin). During the residency, she presented a recital and masterclass and gave a keynote speech entitled “Connecting the Dots From My Music Stand: Learning About Hispanic Music and My Heritage Through Performance.”
  • The Music Department’s first non-traditional ensemble, directed by Professor Timothy Haertel and Dr. Brittny Kempfer, presented their debut concert “Grantline and Beyond” at the Paul W. Ogle Center (Stem Hall). The concert featured multiple acts of original music by students and songs by well-known artists such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Toto, Rush, Paramore, The Doors, and Marvin Gaye. The IU Southeast Rock Ensemble is made up primarily of music and interdisciplinary program majors but is open to all students of the university.
  • The Music Department’s associate ensemble, A/Tonal, will be performing the music by composers of the Louisville Orchestra’s inaugural Creators Corps residency program in the spring of 2023. The chamber group, featuring faculty members Jessica Dorman (piano), Jon Silpayamanant (cello), and Carrie RavenStem (clarinet) will perform the music of Tyler Taylor, TJ Cole, and Lisa Bielawa.
  • Congratulations to Adjunct Professor Tyson Knight for being named one of four winners of the 2022 Under 40 Young Professionals 4 Under 40 Award by the Bedford Young Professionals. Read more ⬈

Music Alumni

  • Kojin Tashiro, who graduated from IU Southeast with both a BA in sound engineering and a BA in music business, was featured in Leo Magazine highlighting his impact on Louisville hip-hop. He has worked with some of the biggest names in the Louisville music scene and beyond, including Jack Harlow. Tashiro also partners with fellow Music Department alum, Ryan Marsh who is the second half of his duo, The Free Soul Effect, a band with a lean toward crafting music for other artists. Marsh’s songs can be heard on Spotify and performances can be viewd on YouTube. Read the feature article ⬈
