5 Struggles and Ingenuity: 1930’s

The Great Depression dominated the 1930s and made simple meals with “stretch” ingredients, often starches like oats or potatoes, became common to give the illusion of more meat. A dish that became popular for this reason was meatloaf, a dish that gave the illusion of a Sunday roast at a fraction of the cost. The decade saw the birth of Ritz Crackers, which were used in another Depression-era recipe, the mock apple pie, due to the high price of apples.
