Disability Programs
There are several different programs available to disabled individuals through Social Security, although they generally fall under one of two programs.
The general requirements of these programs are that one is unable to work due to some physical or mental health problem, and they must meet other technical requirements. The financial support provided to individuals is not based on disabling conditions, except in very narrow instances such as blindness. Some programs are based on household finances while others are based on tax contributions throughout one’s working life, specifically over the last 10 years. The unfortunate reality of the process, which most attorneys or individuals who have filed for disability will tell you, is that it denies an overwhelming majority of the applicants. These denial rates are alarmingly high even for severe health problems such as cancer and amputated limbs. At certain stages, denial rates are as high as 87%. Unfortunately, the majority of people denied do not fight or appeal it, often because they do not have the resources or information to do so. However, this incentivizes Social Security offices to continue to deny higher rates because it is financially beneficial for them.
One of the main purposes of this e-text is to share the nitty-gritty information you need in order to fight and win your disability case.
