8 Rack Gear

The emergence of rack gear stifled the enthusiasm and market for effects pedals in the 1980’s. Rack effects were much larger units that offered multiple effects and more customization. These units were expensive and generally not affordable for the average musician. This development ran parallel to the decrease in popularity of rock ‘n’ roll. MXR and Electro Harmonix, who cornered the market in the decade before, were soon driven out of business entirely, leaving an opening where Boss would take advantage. (Jim Dunlop)
