This course is an introduction to the application of technology in business. The technology topics include data analysis, modeling, and solving business problems using various software in the Microsoft Professional Suite, specifically Excel and Access. This course is designed to be hands on and engaging with current and relevant examples. The course will focus on the personal use of technology skills to increase students’ ability to function as an efficient business professional. Students will demonstrate these skills through a series of assignments and practical exams. Specific student learning outcomes for K160, articulated below, relate to Goal 5 of the undergraduate business curriculum:

Learning Goal 5: Quantitative Analysis and Modeling

Systematically apply tools of quantitative analysis and modeling to make recommendations and business decisions

K160 is designed to give you an introduction to real-world data management and analysis skills. It’s a bit of a fast-paced course with a lot of tasks to manage, but staying on top of your assignments and coming to class prepared will go a long way toward helping you succeed. The structure of the course is similar to K201: Computers in Business, so establishing good habits this summer will prepare you for taking that course next semester, if you choose to do so.

In this book, you will find most of what you need to success in this course. Coupled with assignments, Canvas content, and additional database and spreadsheet files, you will navigate through K160 in a logical and structured way. Here are the various parts of this eText:

  • Data Analysis with Microsoft Excel – this part has 9 chapters and covers the problems and exercises for analysis using Excel
  • Data Modeling with Micrsoft Access – this part has 4 chapters and covers the problems and exercises for database modeling using Access
  • Introduction to the Business Model Canvas – this part has 3 chapters that covers this method of examining how a business operates

Each Chapter from the first two parts will have the following sections:

  • Guided Exercises – these problems will be worked together in class each day with your instructor (contents with white background)
  • More Practice – these problems are for you to do after class, prior to the following class topic (contents with orange background)
  • Supplemental Materials for Excel – some Excel chapters have supplementary material for clarification and extra study (contents in Appendix A)

NOTE

Assignments, quizzes, and assessments are not covered in this eText. The course site will navigate you through those deliverables.
