Drawing on over forty years of observing wolves in America’s national parks, retired Yellowstone National Park ranger Rick McIntyre explores the intricacies and complexities of wolf behavior in his book series, The Alpha Wolves of Yellowstone. These books act as “biographies” for individual wolves and packs, capturing myriad behaviors–from competition to collaboration–that wolves have used to survive and thrive in America’s first national park.

The latest book in the series, Thinking Like a Wolf: Lessons from the Yellowstone Packs, was shared with contributors to the Pressbook. The true stories in this book capture the strategies used by eight different wolves to form packs, best rivals, collaborate with family members, and raise their young. This exploration of the inner workings of wolf packs also offers insights that we, as human readers, can learn from and perhaps even apply to our own lives.

Other books in the series include The Rise of Wolf 8: Witnessing the  Triumph of Yellowstone’s Underdog; The Reign of Wolf 21: The Sage of Yellowstone’s Legendary Druid Pack; The Redemption of Wolf 302: From Renegade to Yellowstone Alpha Male; and The Alpha Female Wolf: The Fierce Legacy of Yellowstone’s 06.
