Book Description: This resource serves as a critical reader of open access (OA) scholarship on Critical Race Theory (CRT). Each of the authors selected a different article that in some capacity (e.g., guiding framework) involves CRT. Then, authors engaged in a review of the very same article. Each review includes a description of a) why the given article was chosen, b) the actual review, c) relevant questions for the audience to consider, and d) additional resources for those that want to learn more about the topic.

Book Description

This Pressbook is part of an open pedagogy project meant to engage with open access scholarship on Critical Race Theory (CRT). The CRT movement has been under attack in recent years, particularly during the administration of former President Trump. While such attacks lack merit, they have been widely adopted by mainstream America. Unfortunately, although unsurprisingly, these bouts have created a stigma and misrepresentation of the work of many legal scholars who started the movement. As a result, CRT and related concepts have been banned throughout the educational pipeline as well as from federal trainings at different points. Often, these bans are based on notions of “reverse racism.”

To some extent, this reader serves as a response to said attacks. The reader is divided into seven parts, each authored by a different student. It is important to note that each part begins with the original open access article chosen by students (not authored by them) based on interests. Following the article, is the student’s review, which begins with a brief discussion of why the OA article was chosen. Reviews conclude with relevant questions for the audience as well as recommended texts for those that want to learn more about the given topics. This format is followed across each of the seven parts. The volume begins with articles situated in a K-12 context including the topics of school closings and teachers of color, followed by articles within the higher education sector. Within higher education, the focus spans across methodological, conceptual, student, and faculty topics.
