14 Naps

I’ve struggled with sleep most of my life.

Its not insomnia, I sleep plenty.

My circadian rhythms aren’t off, it’s been steady

at points. Still I fail to dream and wake

in the middle of the night.

I toss and I turn

off the lights, then back on

and still I feel sleep beckon

as it inches further away.

I’ve tried every drug on the street

melatonin, marijuana,

alcohol, and trazodone,

But nothing works as well as when you hold

my head to your chest and I hear your heart beat.
