Demographic Data

These sources give information on specific populations at either the county, state, or national level. This information could include population count, household income, employment breakdowns, and other socioeconomic indicators. Demographic data may be useful for identifying accurate target populations during the assessment stage of implementing a prevention strategy.

Determinants

These sources help to establish the socioeconomic determinants of health within a given population. They give contributing factors, or risk and protective factors, for substance misuse and other mental health issues, broken down by county, state, and national levels. These factors could include access to health care, number of opioid prescriptions, premature death counts by race, frequency of mental distress, and many others.

Consequences Data

The sources in this section entail the negative results of the current prevention structures (or lack thereof) in place at either a county, state, or national level. This could include rates of illness related to substance misuse, deaths from suicide or drug overdose, or prevalence of legal violations related to substance misuse.

Outcomes Data

The sources in this section describe the outcomes of substance misuse, particularly in the older adult population. While many of the components are similar to the Consequences section above, this section differs in that it centers on substance misuse, and not the structures meant to prevent it.

Evidence of Effectiveness for Intervention

This section gives a list of evidence for effective strategies in the prevention of substance misuse in older populations. These sources focus on preventions that target common contributing factors in the older adult population, stating whether or not they were effective in reducing substance misuse.
