St. Kitts and Nevis Facts
Review the information below, then do the Map Activity and the Worksheet.
St. Kitts-Nevis is a two island country. It is the smallest independent nation in the Americas, and is located in the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean Sea. This region is also known as the West Indies. People travel between St. Kitts and Nevis by boat or plane. Some boats are big enough to transport cars between Nevis and St. Kitts.
National Flag
Green – fertile lands.
Red – the struggle from slavery through colonialism to independence.
Yellow – sunshine.
Black – our African Heritage.
White stars – hope & liberty.
National Bird
The National Bird is the brown pelican, locally known as the “Booby”.
National Dish
The National Dish is stewed salted codfish with spicy plantains, coconut dumplings and seasoned breadfruit.
National Flower
The National Flower is the Poinciana, locally known as the “Flamboyant”. The seedpods are called “Shack-Shack” because of the sound they make when shaken.
