Poem – 5 Brown Coconuts
Use this poem in a call and response rhythm, allowing your child to answer the question at the end of each verse before moving on to the next verse
brown coconuts swinging in the breeze
Kito looked up and what did he see?
One brown coconut about to fall down
The wind blew again and it fell to the ground
Kito picked it up for his mommy to make sugar cake!
How many coconuts are left on the tree?
brown coconuts swinging in the breeze
Dalila looked up and what did she see?
One brown coconut hanging so low
She climbed up the tree as far as she could go
Dalila picked the coconut off the tree for her dad to make coconut tarts!
How many coconuts are left in the tree?
brown coconuts swinging in the breeze
Nicholas looked up and what did he see?
One brown coconut about to fall on his head
He put his bucket down and it fell inside instead.
Nicholas took the coconut home for his granny to make coconut dumplings!
How many coconuts are left in the tree?
brown coconuts swinging in the breeze
Bobby looked up and what did he see?
One brown coconut perfect for drops
He got his machete and cut it off with a chop
Bobby took the coconut home and made coconut drops
How many coconuts are left in the tree?
brown coconut swinging in the breeze
Carol looked up and what did she see?
One lonely brown coconut, about to fall down
She waited a little while and it fell to the ground
How many coconuts are left in the tree?
ZERO. NOTHING. NONE AT ALL!
But what did Carol do with the coconut after its fall?
Carol took the coconut home and
…she used the fiber to help make a broom
… she used the meat to make coconut milk and coconut oil
… she used half of the shell to make a bowl
… and she painted the other half shell, making art of her own.
