6 Chapter Six: Present-Day Doug
Today, Doug is an active member of the Door County and Sister Bay communities. He is a Catholic, “Kennedy Democrat.” He is a member of the Stella Maris Knights of Columbus and helps organize their meetings and many of their events. He is very interested in speaking with the youth of the community and of the parish to try and pass on what he’s seen and learned in life.
He and his wife Dixie are still happily married and now have several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Most of them do not live in the Door County area, but they do come to visit on occasion. Doug is well-known in the community and has many friends and a lot of extended family in Door County.
Doug has a lot of interest and concern for what schools are teaching, and how Communist ideas are infiltrating the United States. Having grown up with Communism and Socialism as present and largely-discussed issues, he believes he can see the signs of growing Socialist ideals being taught in schools and colleges. He recently published an article in the Door County Pulse about his concerns.6
Doug is also very concerned about other facets of modern politics, especially those involving Taiwan and the middle-east, as previously mentioned. He also still encourages young men and women to join the US military, and he believes it is trying to do good for our country–and those we have promised to protect.
Doug is still strong in his Catholic faith and tries to convert through his actions and kindness. He spreads God’s love and message through both his actions and words, and feels he has been very blessed in his life. One of his neighbors–a young police officer–recently passed away. He asked if he could have a mass said for the young man’s soul. The family agreed, and his mother actually attended the mass even though they were not Catholic themselves.
Doug has lived a full and blessed life, having seen and experienced both sides of many modern political, economic, and racial issues. He looks back fondly on even his hardships, knowing they prepared him for the good life he was able to work himself into, and he has made many long-lasting and deep connections with people. I feel honored to be one of these people.
