Introduction

The Mission

  • Build programs that can attract, enroll, serve, and graduate large numbers of students
  • Create a process to be a continuous improvement institution from now on

What are “at-scale” courses in the IU context?

  • 8 weeks long
    • Allows more opportunities for students to enroll and begin learning throughout the academic year
    • Watch Chris Foley explain some of the rationales in this video
  • Fully asynchronous
    • There are no required meeting times for lectures or instruction
    • There are deadlines and milestones across the 8 weeks; asynchronous does not mean each student creates their own personalized schedule.
  • High enrollment
    • Courses are designed to support lots of students with a wide range of abilities from beginners exploring a new career opportunity to working professionals seeking additional degree/credentials
    • Try to design assessments that are self-grading and/or utilize well-designed rubrics

NOTE: Course enrollments are determined by the campus offering the course. Currently, there is no expectation that courses will have more than 40 students.
