6 Faculty Orientations and Cluster Retreats
Faculty Orientations
Generally, the agenda flows as follows:
- Introduction
- faculty
- IDs/eDS staff
- IUO staff
- Mark overview – statement on academic excellence and improved student success
- Anna – overview of eDS process
- Back and forth between eDS staff, Mark, and faculty.
- note that these orientations tend to be very conversation-based and not heavily structured
- topics covered will likely include:
- collaborative nature of course building
- ID can take faculty ideas and bring them to life.
- Faculty bring the content, we just help them present it in a way that will be effective for students
- emphasize we are not there to “tell faculty what to do with their course”
- accessibility
- we can act as consultants in this area, advising on best practices and how faculty can build a better course for all students
- can connect faculty with resources, like librarians, who can help them find accessible resources
- high-level course design goals
- reduce cognitive load for students (intuitive and consistent navigation, chunking material, etc)
- creating authentic assessments
- engaging/active learning experiences
- building in opportunities for interaction

Cluster Retreats
Preparing for Cluster Retreat
IDs should prepare for a conversation presentation in which they provide a “crash course” on course design. The goal of these sessions is to provide faculty with tools to build courses, even if they’re not able to work with eDS in the future (though many of them may). Assume you will have between 45 minutes and 1 hour to present information including the top 5 best practices, (linked below as faculty overview) a quick view of the demo/showcase course they created, and a quick overview of DesignPlus (primarily to make them aware of what it is and where they can learn more).
Assume you may also be asked to provide a bit of information about a particular tool or practice that pertains to the particular cluster you’re presenting to. Below are some resources you’ll need.
- Archetype course from which to build a custom showcase course with resources
- IDs should get permission from faculty for any resources they choose to include in the course
- add any resources to the resource page that may be relevant to this set of faculty
- Faculty overview handout-1 (also located on resources page in course)
The manager or principal attending the retreat should meet with the ID at least once to prepare and ensure the goals are understood.
Manager or Principal send the following communication 3-5 days before retreat:
Hello, [cluster] faculty!
You have been (or will be shortly) added to a Canvas course created by eLearning Design & Services to provide resources and examples of online course materials for the [cluster group] Cluster. While we will be presenting this resource on [date of retreat], we wanted to go ahead and add you all into the course so that you can take a peek (if you wish) in advance of the presentation. You do not need to review in advance; this is entirely optional.
Best,

Following the Retreat
ID may be asked to record a short (<2 minute) video thanking faculty for the opportunity to meet and a reminder about the resource course they created.
Manager or Principal send the following communication a business day or two after the retreat
Dear [cluster] Faculty,
Thank you for sharing your needs and concerns with us! We are so happy to be invited to contribute to your campus efforts. You have been added to the [LINK SITE HERE] that [ID name] showed you when we met at the retreat. In the meantime, we’d like to share a few more resources below.
