7 Instructional Design Considerations
The New, Integrated Model
In addition to the parameters that courses in the ProS should be 8-weeks long, asynchronous, and designed for an initial class size of approximately 40 students, courses must be able to deliver content and integrate within the existing infrastructure of IU Onlineās wrap-around services for supporting students and assessing student success.
In particular, courses need to be designed so that they can deliver relevant data to different constituents
- Assessment Team
- Success Coaches and Advisors
Assessment Team
In a perfect world, the program will have coordinated with the Assessment Team at OOE to create a list of program competencies that assigns those competencies to specific courses (This doc is sometimes referred to as “The Crosswalk”). This step is crucial before any substantive design work can begin because the assessment team will be running reports on the ProS courses for accreditation purposes and to help identify Outcomes where progress is not sufficient.
If there are no agreed-upon program competencies and rubrics, proceed using the course learning outcomes and make sure they clearly align with specific assessments.
Success Coaches and Advisors
Success coaches and advisors play an important role in guiding students as they move through an academic program and there is a strong correlation between their engagement with students and positive student academic success.
Given the short running length for these courses, there is relatively little time for reaching out to students with additional support should they need it. For this reason, it is recommended that the courses use assessments in Weeks 2 and 3 with meaningful data that can be used to identify any students who might potentially need help.
