Using IU eText Publisher Materials
When designing a course in which the instructor relies on textbook publisher materials, (e.g. McGraw Hill Connect, Pearson Revel, etc.) designing the course can get tricky. The instructor’s assignments and content will likely exist primarily in the publisher’s own site rather than Canvas so it is imperative that we are able to access the publisher’s content for future runs of the course. For most publishers, this will involve a course ID. A few things to note are listed below:
- Since the content created by faculty on the publisher’s site isn’t available to us, we need to ensure we keep a “copy” of the course for future runs of the course. How this is done will vary depending on the publisher. We have info for this on the following pages if you’re working with either Pearson or McGraw-Hill material.
- While it’s fine to use these materials, linking publisher materials with Canvas Outcomes isn’t possible, so it’s best to create original assessments in Canvas that tie back to higher-level learning outcomes, and just use the publisher materials for formative assessments, content exploration, and activities
- This only applies to publisher materials integrated into Canvas thanks to the use of IU eText in the course. Books purchased through the bookstore, which provide students with an online access code, require much less set-up in advance.
- Do not use deep links in the course. This means that on pages where you send students to do work on the publisher’s site, you should write out instructions on where they should go, but not actually link to the assignment. This avoids a lot of issues that we see when copying/syncing/updating courses down the road.
