22 EDITING – The Video Process

Video Consultation

eDS will provide an initial video consultation for each course project that Sean Winningham, Principal Instructional Video Producer, will lead. Ideally, this meeting should take place no later than your third meeting with your faculty during the “Phase 1: Getting Started” stage of course development. During this video consultation, Sean will go over the types of videos that can be created, best practices for video creation and course implementation, and resources available to them such as the Academic Media Production Spaces (AMPS).

Depending on the course’s video needs, the consultation may be a one-time event or lead to extended video support that the Principal Instructional Video Producer will plan and produce a series of videos for the course.

For more information about this and the eDS video production process, please refer to the eDS Multimedia Pressbook page, “TO BE ADDED LATER”.

  • If you don’t have access to this Pressbook, please reach out to Sean.

eDS is able to help create video thumbnails, place videos in the courses, and order captions.

Ownership

At some point relatively early in the process, the eDS Principal/Manager in charge of the ProS should work with the departmental Program Coordinator to create a group account so that the department can own the videos moving forward.

  • Have your instructors give full permissions to edsasset. They can also give full permissions to the IDs, but they MUST do this for edsasset at least.
  • If you are uploading videos, either do it when logged into edsasset or transfer ownership later on.
  • Talk to the instructors early and often about permissions on videos.
    • If the owner leaves the university, we want to still be able to access your ProS videos.
    • Giving us permissions on the videos allows us to request captions, create playlists, make limited, minor edits – all things that will save the instructor a lot of time and work.
    • If instructors are planning to edit videos and re-use for other purposes, they should make a copy (include a link to instructions) so they can edit to their hearts’ desire.

Group Accounts

  • Undergrad videos/PlayPosits will be owned by “edsasset” group account
    • All IDs can get access to the edsasset group account. The passphrase is in 1Password. Contact your principals to get added to the Duo account.
  • Graduate videos/PlayPosits will be owned by the department.
  • Fairbanks videos/PlayPosits will be owned by “mphstuff” group account

ID Leads

  • ID should add themselves into the group account before changing ownership
  • IDs can be set to “Co-editor” and “Co-collaborator”
  • Group account should be set to “Owner”

PlayPosit and Instructor

  • When a course is copied, it doesn’t create a new bulb, but the instructor only has access to the student data from the bulb’s instance in their course
  • If the bulb needs to be updated in a future course run, the ID will have to go into the “edsasset” account to make the changes
