This paper explores the efficacy of electroshock therapy, now known as ECT, in treating those suffering with schizophrenia. ECT can be viewed in multiple ways. It is seen as a second-option to medication, an effective form of treatment, and even more successful with a combination of medication. It provides patients with benefits, but it also can raise costs to receiving the treatment. There have been multiple case studies that proved ECT effective in treating schizophrenia, and one not effective. Factors contributing to the effectiveness of treatment include duration of illness, severity of condition, and specific circumstances of the individual case. Each case is different, so there are varying degrees of effectiveness.

ECT has been proven effective by multiple professionals, studies, and evidence. But with medications always advancing and developing, professionals will just become more effective in treating diseases like schizophrenia. Because of this, medications are almost always the primary form of treatment sought. It has been proven various times that better results are achieved when the use of medication and ECT is combined as a dual-treatment. The success rate is remarkedly higher and yields a better remission rate. Treatment is essential for schizophrenia because there is still no cure. However, with always advancing technology and treatments being discovered daily, there is hope that a cure for schizophrenia will be found soon.
