Methodology

Research for this paper was obtained from IU Southeast’s library database EBSCOhost. Focus was placed on Academic Search Premier, PsychArticles, and PsychInfo to gather peer-reviewed papers and scholarly articles. The evidence used in this research paper was not limited to a certain time. Instead, using past and present articles allowed for a progression of the treatment to be recognized.

This topic was chosen for my research project for various reasons. I have a personal connection with schizophrenia because my brother was diagnosed with it in January 2016. The disease appeared out of nowhere, so we were all caught off guard. Times were tough, and we had no idea how to go about treating him. The disease was a mystery to us. There is so much information on it, I still feel like I know very little about what my brother is suffering with. To better understand schizophrenia, I studied its background, symptoms, treatments, and so forth. After narrowing into a specific type of treatment, I came to my research question: Is the use of ECT effective in treating schizophrenia?
