Are student posts vetted through Turnitin? What stops students from having a friend in the class and copying their posts?
You can collect the student responses and manually send them to Turnitin if you want to check for their originality. That won’t necessarily eliminate students copying from one another, but it will cross check responses against common sites students use to supplement their instruction like SparkNotes.
Another thing you can do to guard against plagiarism is to vary the questions you ask each semester or across sections. Requiring students to respond by pushing the conversation forward with new ideas is also helpful. In this case, always require students to ask each other questions about their posts and don’t grade them until they respond to all the questions asked of them.
Can I control the date and time when students download an assignment from Canvas to start working on?
Yes, all assignments allow you to enter an open date and a due date. Students cannot see the assignment content until the open date and time.
Can I make a discussion graded?
Yes, you can make a discussion graded. You can do this by selecting “edit” on the discussion you would like to make graded. You will then scroll down to the bottom where you can see the option to make it graded along with the fields to enter the points, grade category, and due date.
You can visit the Canvas Guide for a step-by-step explanation of how to make discussions graded. You can also view a general guide to graded discussions.
Can the ‘module to-do list’ be added to the student to-do list in the Canvas calendar, or does the instructor need to add that separately? Do you recommend hot linking the to do list?
Any items with dates within the module can be added to the students to do list. You can also edit any pages in modules and add them to students to do list as well.
How can I delete module pages?
In the Modules view, click on the three dots next to the page you want to delete and you’ll see options for editing the page or deleting it.
How can I include formulae in answers for multiple choice quizzes?
When you edit the questions:
- Click on the 3 vertical dots on the far-right.
- Select the square root of x icon – located 2nd from the right end.
- This will bring up the math formula editor
How can I see if students have downloaded a file?
You can find information about viewing student downloads in the Canvas guides.
Is it best practice to organize by weekly modules, or is it equally appropriate to have two modules per week?
Simple is better. Having one module per week will make it easier for the students to know what they will be doing for the week. If you choose to have two modules, then it will be important to provide clear instructions to the students on how to navigate the course requirements for each week.
In the webinar, you said not to wait to publish a course until the entire course is finished. Can I publish the course now, but hide modules that I’m still working on?
Yes, you can publish the course at any time and unpublish the module you are still working on. When the module is finished, you can publish it again to make it available to students.
What is a Dashboard card?
A dashboard card is an image that you can add to your course settings that will show up in the Canvas dashboard. It helps your course to stand out when students are searching for it.
What is the recommended size for Dashboard cards?
Canvas recommends dashboard cards be 263×148 pixels. For more information, please view Canvas’ dashboard card help documentation.
You can also create a customized dashboard card using the tools in Canvas Studio.
