Interviewing from a Distance

In today’s job market, it’s increasingly common to be interviewed remotely. These interviews typically take the form of either a phone interview or a video interview using platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet.

Remote interviews are popular because:

  • They save time and money for both candidates and employers
  • They expand access to candidates from a wider geographic area
  • They streamline the screening process for employers

Just like an in-person interview, preparation is essential. Research the organization, prepare answers to common questions, and develop thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer.

General Tips for Remote Interviews

  • Schedule with buffer time before and after the interview to prepare and reflect
  • Choose a quiet, private space with minimal distractions
  • Have your materials nearby: résumé, notes, questions, and blank paper
(Don’t read from them, but it’s okay to reference them briefly)
  • Dress professionally, just as you would for an in-person interview
  • Ask for clarification if you didn’t hear or understand a question
  • Pause briefly before answering to avoid talking over the interviewer
  • Use specific examples to illustrate your experience
  • Interview alone—no one else should be in the room
  • Take notes to help you remember key points and prepare for follow-ups
  • Ask thoughtful questions that show your interest and preparation
  • Be ready to discuss your availability for next steps, including in-person interviews
  • Get the interviewer’s name and contact info for follow-up
  • Always thank the interviewer, ask about next steps, and reiterate your interest

Phone Interview Tips

  • Use a landline if possible for a more stable connection
  • If using a cell phone, agree in advance who will call back if disconnected
  • Silence notifications to avoid interruptions
  • Speak with energy—smile, use gestures, and vary your tone to avoid sounding flat
  • Avoid eating, drinking, or chewing gum during the call

Zoom (or Video) Interview Tips

  • Use a professional Zoom account name (e.g., FirstName LastName)
  • Ensure your device is charged or plugged in and has a strong internet connection
  • Test the platform in advance with a friend to check audio, video, and lag
  • Look into the webcam, not at your screen, to simulate eye contact
  • Check your appearance once, then avoid watching yourself during the interview
  • Silence all devices and notifications to prevent distractions
  • Maintain a comfortable distance from the camera—avoid being too close
  • Choose a clean, neutral background that isn’t distracting or overly plain
  • Use natural lighting when possible; avoid backlighting
  • 🟢 Optional: Consider using a ring light or virtual background if needed

🟢 Pro Tip: Consider recording a practice Zoom session to review your performance and improve your delivery.
