Helpful websites
In career services, we use many internal and external tools. Additionally, what we need to best support students in their career development is constantly changing. I included some of my favorite and most consistent resources below for your knowledge and, if interested, exploration.
- LinkedIn Learning – This platform is provided by the IU system and contains a great deal of resources for all kinds of professional development. All people connected to IUPUI can access the service through One.IU. There are also instructions to sync your existing LinkedIn profile with the platform.
- I created a collection to share with students, but the list is fairly short at this time. If you are interested in exploring some topics, we can talk about the resources you think would be beneficial and how to assess the content for inclusion. Click here to access my LinkedIn Learning collection.
- O*Net – O*Net is the platform I use most frequently when advising students.
- Occupational Outlook Handbook – Both O*Net and the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) are resources created by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
- Public Health Careers – This resource was recently released after receiving grant funding for it’s development.
- Careers in Public Health – Another helpful site that has great assessments students can use to help explore interests in Public Health.
Teams
One of my biggest goals while we work together is to limit communication outside of your hours on the job. To do this, we will use Teams to organize ideas and collaborate on tasks. This is a place to jot down tasks you are completing, save documents you are working on in a shared location, and communicate any changes in plans/scheduling. I welcome your text messages and calls, but I will keep it to a minimum as much as possible.
In teams, we will use the following features:
- Calendar
- Tasks
- Posts
- Meet (maybe)
- File storage
There are several courses you can view to learn about Teams through LinkedIn Learning. Please visit the “Intern Onboarding” collection to view the “Microsoft Teams Quick Tips” course. This will help you get acquainted with features in Teams that may be helpful during your internship experience. This course is 28 minutes long.
You will see other trainings through the link. You are not required to do all of them, but they are there as resources for your learning.
Canvas
This is a tool you should be quite familiar with as a student, but there are a great deal of considerations when using canvas to communicate with students. At Fairbanks, each advisor manages a Canvas page to house important information for their students and send direct communication to their caseloads.
I operate the Fairbanks Career & Professional Development Canvas page. My goal with this page is to ensure students have access to information whether or not they are able or interested in meeting directly with me. While I hope all students are comfortable speaking with me, some people have challenging schedules or various reasons to feel they should not reach out to me directly. The Canvas page surveys as an additional outreach tool and aims to provide services in the way that best supports the student.
During your internship, I encourage navigating the page and resources available and assess your user experience. What was confusing? What is missing? What surprised you? This page will continuously evolve and grow over time to meet changing needs and information.
During your internship, you will use announcements quite a bit to share the weekly digest. Our goal in posting to Canvas is to reach students where they already are but also not clog up an already full inbox. I purposely aim for only one posting per week. At times, an additional announcement is made when something is particularly important or time-sensitive.
Sway
The weekly newsletter is built in Sway. This platform was useful to solve a few problems, including a simpler method to build a professional looking newsletter, the opportunity to share the newsletter with alumni, and using an accessible platform for readers with disabilities or other preferences. You can learn the steps to build the newsletter here: Guide to Building the Newsletter.
You will not need to know all of the pieces to build the newsletter. An additional benefit of this method is the ability to set up the announcement for publishing prior to completing the newsletter. This allows the newsletter to post under my name in case of any follow up to the posting. There are stories about this if you really want to get into the “why” of these decisions.
Qualtrics
You may or may not use this platform, but it is excellent survey software that we use for RSVPs, internship proposal forms, gathering information about employment/school after graduating, and to gather interest from alumni in engaging with our students. I share this to be sure you know about our commonly used tools in case it may help address something you are working on during your internship.
