Introduction

Teach Students How to Learn (by Dr. Saundra McGuire) focuses on practical, research-based metacognitive learning strategies, growth mindset, motivation, and time management to teach students how to maximize their learning while using time effectively.

A book discussion group focused on high-impact instructional practices and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) read Teach Students How to Learn during the spring of 2024. Several AirPark Campus colleagues worked collaboratively to develop flexible modules based on the book’s content. Modules include:

  • Growth Mindset by Sarah Akemon
  • Motivation by Kari Spurgeon
  • Time Management by Kari Spurgeon
  • Reading Strategies by Shannan Norrell
  • Study and Homework by Rebecca Morse

These modules and the Canva presentation/notes can be shared with students individually (e.g., by Academic Resource Center tutors), in small groups (e.g., by Supplemental Instruction Student Leaders) or in larger groups (e.g., Professor for a Day).

Modules are available on the IU Columbus Center for Teaching and Learning website (https://columbus.iu.edu/ctl/index.html) as part of a CTL Pressbook – to make the content more flexible and accessible for faculty and staff to share with their students. A video recording of an October 2024 in-service is also available on the CTL website.
