4 Self-Recording Video Options
Whether you are teaching asynchronously online or synchronously face-to-face, creating engaging video content can assist your students with gaining the information they need to be successful in the course while also freeing up in-class time for discussion and activities rather than lecturing. IU offers several software options for recording instructional material to allow students to watch it as many times as they need and at times that are convenient to them. Click the titles of the tools below to learn more about leveraging them for video creation.
Kaltura Personal Capture
Kaltura Personal Capture is a video recording software that must be downloaded to your computer for use. A benefit of this approach is that you can record instructional material without accessing the internet once the software is downloaded. An internet connection is only required when moving recordings from Personal Capture on your computer to Kaltura Mediaspace for sharing via the web.
Kaltura Express Capture
Kaltura Express Capture is similar to Personal Capture except that it does not require any software download to your computer. This can make it an ideal solution for those using a Chromebook for their computing. A caveat of Express Capture is that it is web-based recording, meaning that an internet connection is required for recording. Because of this, any loss of internet connectivity during the recording process can result in a loss of the recording.
Zoom
Zoom meetings can be recorded for future viewing by either recording locally to your computer, which results in an .mp4 file being downloaded to your machine, or by recording to the cloud, which automatically passes your recording to Kaltura for sharing in Canvas or via a link. To record a lecture via Zoom, you can access your IU Zoom account by visiting zoom.iu.edu and clicking “Join a Meeting” or by using your Personal Meeting ID to open a meeting room in which to record.
Microsoft Teams
Much like Zoom, Microsoft Teams meetings can be recorded for future viewing. You can join a Teams meeting on your own, share your screen to display any slides or other instructional material you wish to share, and click record before presenting your lecture or commentary.
