5 Employment
Before you can begin working in the United States, you need to obtain work authorization from OIS or your program sponsor.
J-1 students on an IU DS-2019 require OIS authorization to work on campus. Please complete the On-Campus Work Authoirzation form in Atlas to obtain authorization before beginning your job. J-1 students not on an IU document should contact their program sponsor.
F-1 students do not need OIS authorization to work on campus up to 20 hours total per week. This is a maximum of 20 hours per week for all your jobs combined while school is in session. You can work over 20 hours per week on campus over spring, winter, Thanksgiving, and summer breaks.
On-campus employment means you are paid by Indiana University. Exceptions include businesses that operate on campus at the Indiana Memorial Union. Contact OIS before you accept any on-campus employ-ment not paid by IU.
You need authorization before you begin any off-campus employment. Keep in mind that tutoring, internships, accompanying for a recital, and working for your professor a few hours per week are all considered employment and require appropriate authorization. More information can be found on the OIS website.
Address Updates
You are required by federal regulations to update your local address (usually in Bloomington) in One.IU within ten days of any move, even if it is only temporary (like a summer internship).
Traveling Outside the U.S.
Any time you travel outside the United States, you need a valid signature from OIS on page 2 of your I-20 or page 1 of your DS-2019. Although this is a quick process, it is helpful to request your OIS travel signature at least 2 weeks before you travel, even if you are just going to Canada. Please do not leave the U.S. without a signature if you plan to return in student status.
