18 Health and Safety

Police

IU is dedicated to keeping you safe, and employs its own police department (IUPD) on campus. They work closely with the Bloomington Police Department and can be reached during an emergency by dialing 911. For non-emergencies, please call 812-855-4111. The Commission on Personal Safety offers programs promoting campus safety throughout the year. In addition to providing well-lit campus streets and pathways, they also offer the IU Safety Escort Service. If you feel unsafe walking at night, you can download the TapRide app to request a ride home for yourself and up to one other person.

Bloomington Hospitals

There are two hospitals in town that are open 24 hours per day. Both offer excellent medical services, but emergency room visits are extremely expensive. If your condition is not truly an emergency, we recommend using another facility.

Urgent Care

There may be times when IU’s health center is closed and you need urgent care. You can visit Bloomington’s walk-in clinic if other options are not available.

Health Insurance

As an international student, you are required to maintain health insurance while enrolled in college courses. Anthem BlueCross BlueShield administers IU’s international health insurance plan. Contact an IU student health insurance specialist at 812-856-4650 or studenhc@iu.edu for more information.

You will automatically be enrolled in this plan each semester, and your bursar account will be billed. Contact OIS for more information about the IU insurance fee.

Health Center On Campus

You can access a wide range of health services on campus, including checkups, office visits, counseling services, and additional treatment.

You have the option to charge health services to your bursar bill, and with insurance through IU/Anthem, there is no fee due at the time of service.

Eye Care

The IU School of Optometry has an eye care center on campus that offers a full range of services. They also sell contacts, glasses, and frames.

Private Practice Physicians

Bloomington has many private practitioners and medical specialists. Before or during your first visit to a private practitioner, be sure to clarify whether or not they accept your insurance and how their billing works. Some specialists will require a referral from a general doctor before they will see you.

Each insurance plan and doctor’s office handles billing differently. You can find a list of physicians and specialists on your insurance provider’s website. This is the best way to ensure that the doctor you select will accept your insurance. You can also see whether a specialist is considered “in-network” or “out of network” for insurance billing purposes. It is typically less expensive to visit doctors who are “in-network.”

Assault Hotline

IU’s Sexual Assault Crisis Service focuses on education, prevention, crisis intervention, and counseling related to sexual assault. Any sexual contact without consent is considered sexual assault; this includes rape, sexual battery, and sexual coercion. A person may be incapable of giving consent due to use of durgs or alcohol, or due to an intellectual or other disability. If you or someone you know has been assaulted, you can call the sexual assault crisis service line any time, day or night, at 812-855-0900.

Call 911 for true emergencies.

If you are experiencing a serious medical emergency, need to report a fire or crime in progress, or are in another life-threatening situation, dial 911. They will ask you what type of assistance you need (medical, fire, or police) and where you are currently located, then dispatch the appropriate emergency service to help you.
