Introduction to ArcGIS Pro

Goals

This lab aims to demonstrate the fundamental functions of ArcGIS Pro. ArcGIS Pro is an up-to-date GIS software widely used by professional GIS users. Working in ArcGIS typically involves three necessities of GIS: data management, data analysis, and data output/mapping. In this lab, you will discover some of their essential functionality, change the visualization, and create a map of the county-level population from the 2020 census.

Skills

The purpose of this lab is to help you practice the following skills that are essential    to your success in this course, as well as in professional life beyond school:

  • Start ArcGIS Pro and create a workspace.
  • Display vector format GIS data in ArcGIS Pro and explore its database structure.
  • Examine the “spatial” feature and the “attribute” table of vector data to understand how information is stored in vector data.
  • Use “query” in an attribute table and perform a “select by attribute” query to find locations that meet the selection query.
  • Enhance visualization by changing the base map, labeling features, and changing symbology.
  • Create thematic choropleth maps and visually analyze their spatial patterns.
  • Export a map in a figure format file.
