Global Positioning System (GPS)
Goal
Through this lab activity, we will test how to collect the object’s coordinates (i.e., latitude and longitude) and measure the object’s area (e.g., building, lake, lot, etc.). We will also utilize the data collected by GPS field work to create a point vector file; in other words, it is one of the data conversion methods from a “text-format” coordinates to a “GIS format” vector layer. Then, we will review and discuss how GPS functions, the inevitable error sources, and their consequences.
Skills
The purpose of this lab is to help you practice the following skills that are essential to your success in this course, as well as in your professional life beyond school.
- Creating a point vector layer from location data (e.g., latitude and longitude)
- Collect data using a hand-held GPS device.
