OUR REFUGEE STUDENTS

SECOND YEAR

The Board of Trustees in the autumn semester ‘39 granted free tuition to a minimum of three students. Lottie Lederer of Vienna, Rudolph Grunfeld of Prague and Max W. Meyer of Berlin entered the university under this grant and have now completed their second year of study.

HIGH SCHOLARSHIP STANDING

Last year we reported their respective credit points for the two semesters 2.47, 2.37, and 2.67. Their average scholastic rating for this year is even higher than last year.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

As last year the two boys have lived in their fraternity houses, Sigma Alpha Mu and Pi Lambda Phi, Miss Lederer has lived in Memorial Hall.

A special refugee student committee, appointed by President Wells, conducted a benefit dance, solicited funds and otherwise handled the questions of financial support. Prof. Richard C. Murray served the committee as treasurer and Dr. Beck as counsellor. Mr. Murray reports expenditures of $1015. 32 for the year with a balanced budget.

FACING THE FUTURE

Mr. Rudolph Grunfeld, after two years, has completed his undergraduate course of study and been granted a degree. He has enlisted in national service and is now in a training camp. Miss Lederer married a student of the university and is now residing away from the university. She plans to complete her studies in the University next year and thanks the Trustees and all others who have given her aid.

Max W. Meyer will be a senior next year and, as he is under draft age, expects to return to the university this autumn.

NEXT YEAR’S RESPONSIBILITY

The Trustees have planned to continue their aid to refugee students in this time of crisis and thus continue their work with other American universities in the International Student Service program. Applications have been made for three scholarships for the next year: Max W. Meyer, who has not completed his studies, Erich Ellenbogen in the place of Rudolph Grunfeld, graduated, and Miss Olga B. H. Meyer in the place of Lottie Lederer.

Miss Meyer is a sister of Max Meyer. She now resides in Evansville and is a graduate this spring of the local high school

QUESTION OF FINANCE

The two Jewish fraternities will again assist as they have in the first two years and furnish room and board to the two men students.

Individual students and organizations have expressed their willingness to continue their financial support and interest. The President of the University will be asked to again appoint a committee of students to conduct this work and the Social Affairs Committee of the University have again shown their interest by setting aside a special date in the calendar for a student program of support.

The student graduating and the one who has planned to care for her own expenses both have given the committee hearty expressions of appreciation for the help of the University Board of Trustees, the President and the student committee in charge.
The prospective students seem to deeply appreciate their opportunity. They are planning for as much self help as possible and those more intimately related to the program think it has every possibility of a real success.
