For the academic year of 1947-48, The Earlham College-Indiana University Extension Center offered 50 undergraduate courses, 12 graduate courses, and 7 noncredit courses for a grand total of 69 courses overall. The course subjects included: Art; Business; Economics; Education; Graduate Education; English; Government and History; Health, Physical Education and Recreation; Home Economics; Modern Languages; Mathematics; Philosophy; Psychology; Science (including Botany, Chemistry, and Zoology); Sociology; and Speech. Students paid $6/credit hour, but there were no available degrees to choose from. Students could only take courses toward a degree from either Earlham College or Indiana University. The Extension Center partnered with Purdue University to offer courses through Purdue during the 1951-52 academic year, later seeking another partnership with Ball State University during the academic year of 1968-69.  [1]

The Extension Center became The Eastern Indiana Center in 1962 and started offering its first degree programs during the academic year of 1966-67. During this year, The Eastern Indiana Center offered Certificates in the Humanities, the Sciences, the Social Sciences, Accounting, Management and Administration, and Office Management. During 1969, Associates of Arts and of Business Administration were offered for the first time. The first Bachelor’s degree, a Bachelor of General Studies, was offered starting in 1977.

The Extension Center first became known as Indiana University East in 1971. During the academic year of 1971-72, IU East offered 231 classes in total, including 32 Purdue classes, 18 courses in Connersville, 4 college prep courses, and 12 graduate classes from Ball State. In addition to IU East’s credited courses, 14 noncredit courses were offered, varying in expense and semester. By this time, IU East had added Anthropology, Forensic Studies, French, Geology, Journalism, Music, Physics, Political Science, Theatre and Drama, and Traffic Management to its list of course subjects.[2]

During the academic year of 1980-81, IU East added Labor Studies, Public Affairs, and Military Science to its list of course subjects. Another big step for IU East in the 1980s was the addition of the university’s second Bachelor’s degree, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, that was offered starting in 1984. During the academic year of 1988-89, IU East started planning out nursing courses much more in depth, adding separate sections for Electives, Junior Year, Senior Year, and graduate work. By this time, nursing courses took up a significant chunk of the course schedule in comparison to other subjects.

In 1998, IU East opened a new campus in New Castle, Indiana, and started offering courses at this location for the first time and continues to offer courses there today. The 1990s also saw the following course subject additions: Communication, Industrial Engineering Technology, Supervision, Allied Health, Germanic Studies, Comparative Literature, Herron Art, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Electrical Engineering Technology, Organizational Leadership and Supervision, Restaurant Hotel and Institutional Management, Adult Continuing Education, Integrated Information Management, Computer Integrated Manufacturing Technology, Women and Gender Studies, Integrated Information Technology, Computer Graphics Technology, and Classics.

IU East has a wide range of subjects and degrees to choose from, including Masters degrees in Management, Education, English, Teaching Mathematics, Nursing, and Social Work.
