Supplemental Instruction (SI):

SI is a program designed to assist students who are taking courses that have a large number of students struggling to learn the course material. The SI program contacts instructors of these courses and asks them if they are interested in having an SI leader sit in on their courses and help their students. Most SI leaders have already taken the course they are assisting, giving new students a valuable resource throughout the semester. The paragraph below is the program’s representation on the Academic Support Programs page:

“SI is an internationally recognized program of students helping students. The program focuses on certain courses that cover a large range of material in a short period of time. Study sessions are held at regular times every week. SI leaders direct group discussions aimed at helping students enhance your understanding of the course material. Studies have shown that students who attend SI sessions average one full letter grade higher than students who do not attend.”- Academic Support Programs.

Extreme Summer JUMPSTART:

JUMPSTART takes place every August and is designed for incoming students who are new to IU East, specifically freshmen. JUMPSTART includes mock class and SI sessions, meeting future instructors, games that allow students to meet new people and make connections before classes start, and tips for succeeding at IU East. The paragraph below shares a bit more about the JUMPSTART program:

“Extreme Summer JUMPSTART welcomes all first-year students to a five-day college prep adventure. Students will get a head start for college before classes even begin. This August program offers students the opportunity to experience academic success as they explore IU East. Students will learn what to expect in college, brush up on academic skills, gain self-confidence, and discover what services are available on campus.”- Academic Support Program.

Exam Jam:

Exam Jam is designed by the SI program for students attending study sessions SI leaders hold before finals begin. Each semester has a different theme, such as Casino Night, Disney, Star Wars, and Dinosaurs to name a few past themes. Although Exam Jam is meant for students who are attending SI sessions, any student is welcome to participate in games and grab some food. The short paragraph below shares Exam Jam’s summarized purpose:

“Exam Jam is an all-day campus event held the Friday before finals’ week to help students prepare for their final exams. Students can attend review sessions and stop by the Graf Center for free food, drinks, games, and prizes.”- Exam Jam.
