Conduct at the Desk
On Desk:
There must be at least one Student Assistant at the Circulation Desk at all times. The Student Assistants on shift will alternate every hour between the Circulation Desk and on the floor. There should never be two students sitting at the desk at the same time. If the desk student must leave the desk for a brief period, post the “We’ll be right back sign.” If you anticipate being away from the desk for more than a couple minutes, ask your coworker or Access Services Supervisor to cover the desk.
Studying, Reading, and Homework at the Circulation Desk:
While Student Assistants are at the Circulation Desk, they may read or use a computer for coursework once all other responsibilities and tasks are complete. Student Assistants should not expect or plan to have time during their shifts to complete homework or study for exams.
Student Assistants must be aware of any users entering the library or approaching the desk and immediately stop non-work activity to assist any user who approaches the desk. Please see Library Technology Usage for more details.
Socializing:
Keep conversations at the Circulation service area brief (5 minutes) and quiet. Conversations with friends and classmates must not discourage other users from approaching the desk, therefore Student Assistants must inform friends and classmates who wish to chat further that they will need to wait until they are off-duty or on a break.
Student Assistants must keep the Circulation Desk clear and open for library users to approach.
KA 117:
Only Library employees are allowed to spend time in KA 117 (the area behind the circulation desk). Student Assistants should only use this space when they are scheduled to work.
If a Student Assistant has arrived early for a shift, they can use the table in KA 117 to eat a meal or quietly spend time until their shift begins. Otherwise, Student Assistants are welcome to use the public areas of the Library.
