Discharging Materials
When items are returned, you will need to discharge them in WorkFlows. Users do not need their library card to return books. To discharge an item:
- In WorkFlows, you will first select the Common Tasks tab. Then select Discharge in the menu.
- Scan the barcode to check the item back in. The WorkFlows screen will display the item in the menu, confirming the item has been checked back in.
- If you are checking in ILL material, scan the barcode on the orange card. Leave all paperwork and the orange card in the item, place item on the RETURNS-Orange Card shelf.
- Occasionally, a user will ask for a return receipt. We do not have a way to generate such a receipt. Inform IU users that they can check their account in IUCAT to view materials they currently have checked out. You may handwrite item barcode and title, return date, and your initials on a piece of paper and give to user.
- If WorkFlows displays the message “Item Charged, cannot make hold available,” you will need to discharge the item a second time.
- If WorkFlows generates a slip that says “To Supv for Billing,” you are to put the slip in the item and place the item in the Access Services Supervisor’s mailbox.
- The Access Services Supervisor will determine the final amount, do not quote a fine amount to the user, and do not accept any money from them.
- Clean the book of any litter before placing on the shelving cart. Organize materials on the cart first by shelving location, and then by call number.
- For other IU campus materials, WorkFlows will print a slip that indicates which IU library the book is to be returned to. Place the slip in the item, and place the item on the appropriate shelf.
