Indiana University Libraries’ Book Repair Manual

This manual contains detailed instructions for many of the repairs and enclosures used in the Indiana University Libraries’ Preservation Department to care for its circulating book collections. We share this resource with those who would like to learn repair procedures appropriate for non-rare materials.
Use the Contents list, top left, to locate repair treatments, enclosures, a glossary, and lists of materials and tools.
Garry Harrison, Head of General Collections Conservation from 2000 to 2012, prepared the original text and illustrations. The content presented here was updated in 2025 by Elise Calvi, Head of the Preservation Department.
