17 Clinical Rotation Expectations
The following are expectations of the students while in the clinical setting:
- Students shall participate in all aspects of the department. This will include, but is not limited to:
- Retrieving and escorting patients to and from the department to the appropriate waiting area
- Using proper AIDET (acknowledge, introduce, duration, explanation, thank) skills to introduce and obtain patient identifiers
- Actively participate in all examination preparation which can include, but is not limited to:
- Input patient demographics on the machines
- Prepare exam table and room for the exam
- Select appropriate transducer and preset
- Assemble equipment/supplies for procedure exams (para, biopsy, etc)
- Clean exam room upon completion
- Take initiative to participate in each examination without being asked
- Stock linens, gel bottles, depleted supplies, etc. prior to leaving the clinical site each day
- Students shall remain in an exam/procedure in its entirety unless prior arrangements were made, or the supervising technologist requests a different assignment for the student during that exam.
- Students are not permitted to leave early or ask to leave early from their clinic assignment. Failure to complete a full day of clinic will result in the use of personal time resulting in the use of either half or full “p-day” as described by the Clinical Handbook.
- During downtime students are expected to help organize the department as requested by staff technologists. If this is complete, the student may then be given permission to scan themselves, a willing participant as approved by staff, or study independently.
- Students are expected to observe and assist a minimum of 5 separate exams of the same requisition code (i.e., RUQ, OB complete, Testicular, Echo), respectively, before attempting to scan independently. With this stated, if the technologist recognizes a lack of confidence or knowledge additional observation and/or assistance may be implemented prior to independent scanning
- Students must have a supervising technologist review and/or post scan each exam performed independently prior to submitting a completed study
