2 Pre-Clinical Health Compliance Requirements
IU Indianapolis Student Health Center
Students accepted into any Radiologic & Imaging Sciences program should immediately set up a patient portal with the Campus Student Health Center. Once set up, students can upload immunization and other health records into the portal for verification and viewing by Campus Health staff. Students can also view their records at any time and print a copy if needed. Health records are less likely to get lost and the student is less likely to be on the Campus Health noncompliance list each semester when documents are stored in the portal.
Throughout the program, students may be required to supply current immunization and other health related records to clinical sites as they request them. Documents stored in the portal can be easily accessed and forwarded to the requesting institution. A quick reply to those requesting documents will ensure the student can remain in the clinic and avoid any unexpected absences. Delays in providing documentation could prohibit the student from attending an assigned location. This would cause the student to use their personal time until appropriate documents are supplied.
Immunizations and Health Insurance
All entering students are required to document their immunization history through Med+Proctor and provide proof of health insurance to the Health Professions Programs office (see Onboarding Canvas site for more details). Specific clinical sites may require documentation and/or onboarding of medical compliance, therefore students are required to keep an electronic copy of documentation readily available. Students who do not comply with these requirements are subject to being check-listed with the university. They also are ineligible to participate in clinical education activities while non-compliant. (See IU School of Medicine-Health Professions Programs letter addressing the List of Required Immunizations). Information on health insurance plans for those who do not have insurance can be found at the following website Fees & Insurance: Medical Services: Health & Wellness: Division of Student Affairs: Indiana University Indianapolis (iu.edu)
Due to the length of the immunization process for Hepatitis B, a student may attend fall semester clinic (if at least 1 dose out of 3 has been given) but must show proof of completion of the Hepatitis B series by the beginning of the spring semester.
Testing Requirements
Students entering the program are required to document compliance in a health screening, background check, drug screen, Tuberculosis Skin Test (TST), Respiratory FIT testing (N95 or other Mask), and flu shot annually. The Health Professions Program (HPP) office documents student compliance with these policies. The HPP office can address any questions about paperwork or compliance with this policy. They are located on the IU Indianapolis campus in the Van- Nuys Medical Science Building. Their address is 635 Barnhill Drive, MS 203, Indianapolis, IN 46202. You may contact them at 317-278-4752 or at web site: https://indiana.sharepoint.com/sites/MedNet-UndergradStudents/SitePages/ReturningStudents.aspx
Students who have a weight change (roughly 15 pounds or more) or facial hair modification will be expected to repeat a Respiratory Fit Testing for proper N95 Mask Size.
At the end of the spring semester of the first year, students will be required to meet the same compliance issues for the second year of the program. Students who are not in compliance with the policy will not be permitted in clinic. The time off will be counted as personal time until the student completes the prerequisites .
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Each student will be required to obtain and maintain a valid CPR certification throughout the program. There are many different organizations that offer various levels of CPR training; however, we require the American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, which is tailored to healthcare providers.
This particular certification cannot be offered online and MUST be scheduled as an in-person class taught by a registered BLS instructor with the American Heart Association https://cpr.heart.org/AHAECC/CPRAndECC/UCM_473161_CPR-and-ECC.jsp. Any other type of certification will NOT be accepted by our program, and you will NOT be allowed to attend clinical rotations without the correct certification. More information on obtaining CPR certification will be provided in the program Onboarding Canvas site.
FIT Testing
All RISP students who have the potential to directly care for patients requiring airborne precautions while in the clinical setting are required to be fit tested for an N95 respirator mask. N95 filtering face-piece respirators are air-purifying respirators certified by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) that protect against airborne contaminants (i.e., dusts, fumes, microbial agents such as tuberculosis bacteria, Covid-19, & flu virus). Fit testing is the process used to determine the appropriate N95 respirator mask (type and size) to ensure consistent and proper mask use. At times, students may be required to wear an N95 respirator mask for tasks such as entering isolation rooms and other activities involving close contact with potentially infected persons. All students are responsible for maintaining compliance with the fit testing requirement and must schedule a fit testing appointment at the IU Indianapolis Campus Health Center. All N95 masks needed in the clinical setting will be purchased by the RISP department and available to students as needed.
Students will be fitted in summer of their 1st year in the program prior to visiting clinical sites and will only be required to complete a fitting once while enrolled in a Radiologic and Imaging Sciences Program. Please arrive clean shaven to your fitting. If you have a mustache or beard that is permanent, please still attend your pre-scheduled training time and location. If you do not pass the fit testing, you will need to get approval from your Program Director or Clinical Coordinator to be exempt from participating in clinic when N95 respirator masks are required. Please keep in mind, this could potentially limit your clinical course experience and/or delay your progression in the program.
