18 Clinical Rotation Expectations

The following are expectations of the students while in the clinical setting:

  • Students shall participate in all aspects of the department. This will include, but is not limited to:
    • o Retrieving and escorting patients to and from the department to the appropriate waiting area
    • o Using proper AIDET (acknowledge, introduce, duration, explanation, thank) skills to introduce and obtain patient identifiers
    • o Actively participate in all examination preparation which can include, but is not limited to:
      • Input patient demographics on the console
      • Prepare table and room for the exam
      • Select appropriate equipment for exam
      • Assemble equipment/supplies for exam
      • Clean exam room upon completion
    • Take initiative to participate in each examination without being asked
    • Stock linens, contrast, depleted supplies, etc. prior to leaving the clinical site each day
    • Students shall remain in an exam/procedure in its entirety unless prior arrangements were made, or the supervising technologist requests a different assignment for the student during that exam.
    • Students are not permitted to leave early or ask to leave early from their clinic assignment. Failure to complete a full day of clinic will result in the use of personal time resulting in the use of either half or full “p-day” as described by the Clinical Handbook.
    • During downtime students are expected to help organize the department as requested by staff technologists. If this is complete, the student may use the time to acquaint themselves with the equipment, protocols, and procedures.
    • At a minimum, students are expected to “observe” and “assist” all exams. Once a student feels confident about the steps/parameters of an exam, they may request that the supervising technologist allow them to “perform” the exam.
    • Students must have a supervising technologist review the “performed” exam prior to submitting a completed study and releasing the patient.
