Submitting final course grades
If you have been entering student grades in Canvas throughout the semester, you can import your final course grades into SIS (Faculty Center) from Canvas. Read on for more details about this process.
While not recommended, you may have grades in a spreadsheet or on paper. You can mass upload or transcribe this grade information directly into Faculty Center or Canvas. The KB docs “Use the Faculty Center to enter grades into your class roster” or “Submit final grades in Canvas via a file upload” provide the details on this approach.
Campus grading deadline: Final grades for full-term classes are due by 8:00 p.m. on the fourth day following the last class meeting or final exam. (For further information on this policy visit the Registrar’s Final Grades & Grade Entry page.)
Importing ExamSoft grades into Canvas
If you have not yet pushed your ExamSoft grades over to Canvas, start by logging into ExamSoft then follow these steps to push your exam scores over to Canvas.
Step 1: Confirm grades in Canvas
- If your course has weighted assignments, ensure the Assignment Groups in the Canvas Assignment tool are weighted appropriately.
- See the Canvas Guide “How do I weight the final course grade based on assignment groups?” for more information.
- In the Grades tool, enter values for missing work. Enter a “0”, or if a student was excused from an assignment, enter “EX”. Assignments with EX scores are excluded from a student’s final grade.
- If you would like to set all blanks for an assignment to 0 at once, see the Canvas Guide “How do I set a default grade for an Assignment?“ for instructions.
- Check that all grades are posted for all assignments in the Grades tool. If you see the visibility icon of an eye with a line through it (
) at the top of the assignment column, some scores are still hidden for this assignment.
- To post hidden grades, see the Canvas Guide “How do I post grades for an assignment in the Gradebook?”
- Check the course grading scheme in course Settings.
- To enable or edit the course grading scheme, go to the course Settings at the bottom of the left side navigation, in the “Course Details” tab, scroll down to “Grading Scheme.”
- Check the box by “Enable course grading scheme”, then click “set grading scheme.”
- The IU Default Grading Scheme will pop up. If this matches the one in your course syllabus, you’re done. If it doesn’t, see the Canvas Guide “How do I add a grading scheme in a course?”.
- If the grading scheme has previously been enabled, check it is correct by clicking “view grading scheme”.
- Review final course grades. Override if needed.
- It is important that the Canvas final score match what is submitted to the Registrar in the Faculty Center.
- You can now do this in Canvas using the Grade Override tool. See the KB article “Override the final course grade in Canvas” for instructions.
- Note that you cannot change a final grade to an Incomplete (I), Failed/Stopped Attending (FN), or Failed/Never Attended (FNN) in Canvas. You must do this in SIS.
Step 2: Import Canvas grades into SIS
- From the Canvas Grades tool, click the dropdown arrow next to “IU Grading Tools” at the top right.
- Select “SIS Grade Roster.”
- If the course only has one section, a new tab will open displaying the SIS grade roster for that section.
- If your browser blocks pop-ups, you will have to adjust your settings. Contact the UITS support center if you’re unsure how to allow pop-ups.
- If your course has multiple sections, refer to the images in step 4 under the “Load Final Grades ” section in the Knowledge Base.
- In the grade roster, click “ .
- After a few moments, the calculated final grades from the Canvas Grades tool will appear in the “Grade Input” column.
- Click “S to save the imported grades.
- Review the grades displayed to confirm they match the final letter grade displayed in Canvas.
- If assigning an “I” “FN” or “R”, remove the student’s letter grade and input the appropriate letter(s).
- Review the Grade Values information from the Registrar for details on when to use these values.
- If you make any modifications in step 7, save again.
- When you are ready to submit your final grades, click “ .
- Celebrate a course well done. Cheers to you!
