Work in Progress Sessions Return!

  • The AMPATH Kenya Research Program Office is excited to announce the resumption of Work In Progress presentations (WIPs) starting in July.
  • The WIPs will occur every 3rd Tuesday of the month between 4 – 5 pm EAT and represent an ideal forum for researchers within the AMPATH Consortium to showcase their studies to the broader research community.
  • If you have an ongoing research study and would like to present, please sign up using the sign-up form linked here.

D43 HIV Implementation Science and Dissemination Grant updates

  • The grant MPIs, along with faculty and staff from Moi University’s School of Public Health (MUSPH), will meet in Eldoret next month to debrief on grant progress this past year and review a path forward for the next year of grant implementation.
  • The first master’s cohort of trainees will select research rotations ahead of their second year, which begins in September.
  • Preparations are underway to recruit the second cohort of master’s level trainees in August.
  • The DrPH program is set to start either this September or January 2025 at MUSPH and will be led by Dr. Faith Yego, a faculty collaborator on the grant.
    • Recruitment for the grant’s first cohort of doctoral candidates will coincide with the start of this program.

Research Translation Initiative Moves to IREC for Approval

  • Christopher Rice, the research translation and policy lead at  the IU Center for Global Health Equity, and Dr. Yego at Moi have submitted a proposal to IREC to conduct a research translation needs assessment at AMPATH Kenya.
  • This assessment will survey stakeholder groups in and around the AMPATH Kenya community – including NGO partners, staff at the Ministry of Health, county health officials, and researchers at AMPATH – to gauge their competencies and areas of opportunity across the research translation paradigm.
  • Dr. Yego and Mr. Rice will serve as PIs upon approval of the proposal.

Machine Learning Workshop Taking Place in Eldoret Soon

  • NAMBARI, the Moi-Brown Partnership for HIV Biostatistics Training, and the Data Science for Social Determinants program will host a week-long course/workshop on machine learning and predictive inference in Eldoret soon.
  • Around 80 participants will join the sessions, including professional statisticians, data analysts, faculty members, and more.
  • Instructors for the workshop include Dr. Rumi Chunara (NYU), Dr. Joseph Hogan (Brown), Dr. Ann Mwangi (Moi), Dr. Ziv Shkedy (Hasselt University), and Allison DeLong, MSc (Brown).
  • This workshop was slated to occur the week of July 1st but was postponed due to the protests taking place in Kenya.
