The Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) Conference is February 20-23, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia. Several awards will be presented during the conference. The Consortium of Universities for Global Health wishes to acknowledge the accomplishments and commitment of outstanding individuals who contribute to the advancement of global health worldwide. CUGH has three awards that will be presented at its annual Global Health Conference. Only CUGH members may submit a nomination. However, members and non-members may be nominated.
Award Categories:
- CUGH Distinguished Leadership Award: Award criteria – a candidate must have: Demonstrated a long-term, profound commitment to global health; Made an exceptional contribution to improving global health, through interdisciplinary activities across research, education, advocacy and/or service; Demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in her/his field resulting in significant, lasting benefits for global health outcomes particularly for the world’s poor; Inspired excellence among peers and staff and is well-respected in the global health community nationally and internationally; and Played a pivotal role in advocating for, implementing or advancing global health policies and/or programs that improve the health of people and the planet.
- CUGH’s Dr. Thomas Hall-Dr. Nelson Sewankambo Mid-Career Leadership Award: Nominees must be between the ages of 30 years and 50 years before December 31st, 2025. Open to individuals working within and outside academia. a candidate must have: Demonstrated a proven commitment and consistent record of outstanding achievement in one or more of the areas of global health education, research, advocacy, and/or service; Worked to reduce health disparities, particularly within low-income communities; Established collaborations with colleagues in resource-poor settings; Played an important role in advocating for, implementing, or advancing global health policies and/or programs that improve the health of people and the planet; Demonstrated strong leadership abilities.
- CUGH’s Dr. Wasserheit Young Leader Award: Be under the age of 30 the year the award is given (eg: as of December 31, 2025, for 2025 award). Open to individuals working within and outside academia. a candidate must: Possess a record of outstanding achievement in one or more of the areas of education, research, advocacy, and/or service, particularly targeting the reduction of health disparities; Have collaborated with colleagues in resource-poor settings to improve global health outcomes for the vulnerable or the poor. Have demonstrated strong leadership abilities.

The Velji Family Foundation annually celebrates global health education, research and service by honoring individuals and projects that demonstrate committed, creative approaches to serving underserved populations. Awardees receive: Recognition at the 2025 CUGH Conference; Waived conference registration; Recognition certificate; USD $600 to support ongoing global health activities.
Membership Requirements: CUGH membership is not required to submit a nomination, however 4 of the 5 awards must be awarded to a CUGH member.
Award Categories:
- Velji Student Leader in Global Health: This award honors a trainee who has created a program/innovative product that is having a positive impact on the well-being of people in low-income settings or the environment. Nominees must be a CUGH member, or affiliated with a CUGH member institution.
- Velji Faculty Leader in Global Health Innovation*: This award honors a faculty member who has implemented/developed an innovation that is having a positive impact on the well-being of people in low-income settings or the environment. *Must have been implemented within the last 5 years. Nominees must be a CUGH member, or affiliated with a CUGH member institution.
- Velji Global Health Award for Teaching Excellence: This award honors a faculty member who has been an outstanding teacher and who has had a particularly significant impact on the lives of those living in low resources settings. Nominees must be a CUGH member, or affiliated with a CUGH member institution.
- Velji Young African Leader Award: This award honors an individual who will be: under 35 years of age on December 31, 2023, born in an African nation, and is currently attending/working in an institution in Africa. The winner has shown exceptional ability and commitment to improving the wellbeing of individuals in low income settings. This award is open to all – CUGH membership is not required.
- Velji Planetary Health/One Health Innovation Award: This award will recognize individuals, groups, or communities that have demonstrated: Innovative approaches leading to balance of environment, biosphere, and human health; Novel ideas and replicable solutions to preserve ecological sensitive environment conducive to human animal health and ecology; Interdisciplinary projects preferably integrating threatened communities internationally; Solutions and ideas that have been cost-effective and can be easily replicated with wise use of human resources; Nominees must be a CUGH member, or affiliated with a CUGH member institution.

Effective communication is vital to our ability to impact the pressing challenges the world is facing. Conveying messages visually is a powerful way to achieve this. In this spirit, we are pleased to announce that CUGH’s 12th annual Global Health Video Competition is now open to receive short video submissions in two categories: Global Health Challenges or High Impact Solutions.
Anyone can submit a short (under 5 min. video, 1 per individual). We strongly encourage submissions from individuals working in low resource settings. Submissions from organizations are ineligible.
There will be a winner and two honorable mentions in each submission category. All six videos from the winners and honorable mentions will be featured at the conference, on the CUGH website, and newsletter.
The top submission in each category will receive one (1) free registration to the conference.
- Global Health Challenges – illustrates a threat that impacts human or environmental wellbeing that may receive little attention
- High Impact Programs – showcases a high impact program/initiative that can improve human wellbeing or environmental outcomes
