10 The Break-Ups Are Definitely Not Real

If by real you mean you made them all up
in your head, there was never any break-ups—
the surprise when your dreams become stories
that the words you write down are fake—all of them
You lie when you say you’re married to them all
in fact, you’re single—you’ve never experienced love
the tales you speak of your neighborhood of past loves.
Those are images you have yet to see, you wish for.
Can you imagine the amount of break-ups you haven’t experienced
Like what a slice of cake tastes like, that you have only looked at
Even now, your fantasies of a husband
for one person lies and breaks your heart
Another reads old newspapers, these people exist
in different realities. None of which are your own.
