8 Use of generative AI
Generative AI refers to artificial intelligence software that generates text, images, or other types of media based on prompts or provided information. Chat GPT is an excellent example of a generative artificial intelligence. LHSI and IU realize that a lot of students are exploring the applications of generative artificial intelligence. UITS has created a website with resources for using AI.
Policies and Precautions
UITS has released precautions to keep in mind and acceptable uses of generative artificial intelligence. You can see the full article here but here are some highlights:
-
-
- DO NOT input institutional data to AI. Examples include names of employees, research participants, or patients. Any data that is related to student, staff, and faculty intellectual property (things created by others). Your own personal data is also institutional data.
- Acceptable uses include for lesson planning, communication (when no student or employee information is submitted), professional development activities, event planning, and synthesizing/reviewing publicly available information (i.e., articles, proposals, etc.).
-
Also be aware that some academic journals are creating policies around use of AI in scholarly work. If you plan to publish at some point, check with your supervisor and any relevant journals for policies and procedures before using AI.
AI and ePortfolio Prompts
AI tends to generate generic content. For the purposes of LHSI, we strongly recommend against using this to answer the reflective prompts. You will not meet the rubric criteria if you use AI-generated responses without heavy editing to include examples and stories specific to you. A more helpful use would be to use it to check grammar and spelling or as an assistant after you’ve written your response.
