30 Engaging interns in your workplace

Here are some tips for welcoming and engaging your intern throughout the experience. This information is based on feedback directly from previous interns on what made them feel like a valued member of the team.

Include them

  • Include interns in anything your team does, such as team meetings, project planning, journal clubs, and other events
  • Ask for their input and feedback during meetings and 1:1 time
  • Invite interns to non-work or social events that your team may have
  • Ensure the whole team and collaborators are welcoming and treat interns as a valued part of the process

Give feedback and check in

  • Ask about life outside the internship- how are classes? How is everything else?
  • Be clear on who will supervise the intern on a regular basis if it’s not the PI or person they met at the interview
  • Provide ongoing constructive feedback and honest feedback on mistakes and areas to improve
  • Point out when you notice they’ve grown professional or in skills/abilities

  • Provide the tools they need to succeed and tailor their tasks to their growth and interests
